The Hertfordshire Park at Harewood, located midway between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye, is owned today by the Duchy of Cornwall, but at one stage in history it was part of the royal hunting estate. At nearby Harwood End racing was staged for the first time on Monday 25th October 1840 when the opening Sweepstake was won by Miss O’Brien owned by Mr Hill. Meetings were held annually for the next 6 years, culminating in a meeting on Tuesday 13th October 1846. The circular one mile course started in Mr Parry’s field oppsite the Harewood End Inn, and carried on through Mr Maddox’ land. A large attendance was boosted by visitors from Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye and Hereford. The meeting concluded with the Handicap Hurdle over 6 flights, with Emperor defeating Merchant and Helen. The day was rounded off by an Ordinary served for 40 people at the Harewood End Inn. |
